What do you do with a drunken sailor?

Not that anybody was actually drunk...nor was there any sailing. Or sailors. (But there were boats!) A more accurate title may have been "What do you do with a sleep-deprived wife who desperately wants to get out of the house but is too tired to do much of anything, and really shouldn't be out in public for the safety and well-being of everyone around her?"

But that's a little long, as a title, and it just doesn't have the same ring to it! However, it more accurately sums up the state of affairs Chez Quimby yesterday morning. For some reason - and I have no explanation for it - I could not sleep Friday night. Or sleep in Saturday morning. So I woke up early, groggy, and cranky. However, it was a beautiful day, and I couldn't stand the idea of staying inside. I had the brilliant idea that we should walk up to the neighbourhood and get groceries, and maybe stop for a coffee with our new travel Scrabble set while we were at it.

Mr.Q, observant man that he is, knew I'd make it about halfway to the store before I crashed, and I'd spend the rest of the afternoon in a snit. He suggested I stay home and give him a list. But he's been really busy the last couple of weeks, so the afternoon was our only opportunity for Quality Time this weekend, and I wasn't going to give that up. (Because, you know, hanging out in a busy grocery store with a tired, bitchy spouse is everybody's definition of "Quality Time"!)

So, he did what he does best in this kind of situation: told me (nicely) to be quiet, and do what I'm told. Then he told me to grab my knitting, and a snack, and that we were going for a walk to the wee park at the end of the street. There are benches looking out over the port and Burrard Inlet, and I was going to knit while he read a book, and I was not to argue with him, but I should hurry up and get my shoes on.

I, of course, did what I do best in this kind of situation: I shut up and did what I was told. Because he's usually right. This was no exception.

The view from our bench:

There was indeed knitting:

That, my friends, is my first-ever sock on 2 circs, and I can't believe I resisted for so long! It's not really any faster than DPNs for me, but it's super-easy. And it's my first real-sized toe-up sock, too! In Miss Bab's Wisteria colourway - the colours here are not nearly as vibrant as the real thing, and it's lovely to knit with. (Can't remember the pattern off the top of my head, and I'm too lazy to go find it just now!)

There were boats, coming and going...I love watching them!

Then, worn out from all the excitement, I had a little nap on the bench in the sun for about half an hour. When I woke up, we broke out the Scrabble:

I can't tell you who won, coz some time ago, Mr.Q decided he didn't like playing for points. (By "some time ago" I mean "at some point near the beginning of our honeymoon." I kept beating him.) (There are 2 bingos on the board, one across a triple word score. Those are mine. For the record.)

We were at the park for almost an hour and a half, in the end. It was really the perfect way to spend the afternoon. Then we went home, and I had another nap.

(And slept about 11 hours last night...think I'm finally caught up!)

My mother didn't like to play for points either, so we never did. My family also use an endgame where everyone pools their leftover tiles to Beat the Board - to use up all the tiles in real words, or as close to real words as we can get.

I think you have The.Best.Husband.Ever. But I'm sure you already know that. Does he have any brothers? :)
